Tour of the Otways
2020 Long Weekends - ROAD

MELBOURNE Pick-Up & Return
TOUR I: Oct 9-13 2020

The Topbike Tour of the Otways will be a long weekend (four days), of riding the roads of the Otway Ranges.

While we will visit the well known towns of Lorne and Wye River along the Great Ocean Road, the emphasis will be on riding the scenic roads less travelled, through forests and farmlands.

Also noting that the highest point of the Otways is just on 670m (Mt Cowley), so you won’t be spending all day on one climb.

All rides are fully supported, starting and finishing in Forrest. We’ll be aiming to ride different roads on all days, with a minimum of overlap. Initially there will be just 8 places, but we have a possibility for more, if demand increases. Accommodation and all meals – sourced from local providers (with low food k’s) included.

Topbike Electric Bikes are also available: E-Bikes are a great option for those occasional riders or partners of riders who want to come on tour. All of Topbikes’ Cycling Tours are achievable by anyone on one of our E-Bikes.

2020: Day 2 | Oct 10, Big Clockwise loop down to the GOR & return (140k)

Sat Oct 10 |
Big Clockwise loop down to the GOR & return (95k)
We are starting with our biggest day on the bike. So, there’ll be a big breakfast, with plenty of coffee, before we start, and ride south out of Forrest, towards the coast. It’s a fantastic 140k ride that takes in not only the Great Ocean Road as it passes through the Aire valley, but also Lavers Hill and Turtons Track. There’s coffee stops available at Apollo Bay and Ferguson, and craft beer at the Brewery once we are back in Forrest. From Barramunga it is possible to roll all the way back to Forrest without pedalling, although I have never managed it, apart from in a Fiat 125. Aperitifs on the back deck of Topbike HQ, followed by dinner at the Guesthouse.

2020: Day 3 | Sunday Oct 11, Large figure 8, out to the north-west
 (121k)

Sun Oct 11 |
Today we’ve got a similar distance to yesterday, in a 121k figure of eight loop away to the north, up to Beeac. While equal in length, it traverses the farmlands and lake region of Colac and peaks at a maximum height of 280m, and totals just 1100m in ascent. Lots of rural views all the way, and a planned lunch at the Beeac hotel may include a small tour of part of the owner’s massive car collection (it’s in a shed just behind the main dining room). It’s mainly a flat ride all the way home, but the support car is there, in case you need it.

2020: Day 4 | Monday Oct 12, Amy’s Loop
 (120k)

Mon Oct 12 |
Traditional 120k loop east of Forrest famously known as the ‘Amy’s Loop’ (although we were riding it for a long time before it earned this name). We’ll be riding it in a clockwise direction, meaning we’ll have to go 70k, up and over Benwerrin, before stopping for coffee at Wye River, after passing through Lorne. Two big climbs, the second one from Skene’s Creek is the larger, but still we do not crack 600m above sea level for the whole ride. Once more you can have a crack at rolling into Forrest from Barramunga. Aperitifs on the back deck of Topbike HQ, followed by dinner at the Guesthouse.

As we turn further south we commence our gentle climb up towards the ridge line of the Otways, and stop at Ferguson for coffee. Post coffee we continue on, through Beech Forest and a make a second visit to Turtons track, before taking the last turn for home on the Forrest-Apollo Bay Rd. We’ll have lunch back at the Guesthouse before loading the cars and returning everyone back to Melbourne.
