What to Bring on a Topbike Tour

Worlds 2013 Florence

Topbike Tours World Road Championships
2013 Florence – Florence Sept 20-30 2013

Ride the rolling Tuscan hills, sip Chianti in a Piazza and scream yourself hoarse amongst the Italian tifosi (fans) on the Fiesole hill, as you watch the pro's pass ten times, on their journey to see who will wear the rainbow jersey for the following year.

Topbike will spend the first 6 nights perfectly located for TT viewing (and riding) in the medieval city of Pistoia, before finishing with the final four nights in a genuine Florentine Palazzo, located a few steps from Il Duomo. This holiday is perfect for cycling and non-cycling couples as we will run a full non-cyclist itinerary, paralleling our cycling tour. Places are limited to 13 clients in total (with 3 staff).

Itinerary Sept 20-30 2013

FRIDAY, September 20

Topbike Worlds Tour 2013 will commence with a 10am pick up – Florence's 'Santa Maria Novella' railway station.
From here we shall transit in the Topbike air-conditioned van 40 km to the medieval city of PISTOIA.  Our accommodation for the next 6 nights is a renovated villa of charm, located 4 km from the historic town centre. After lunch, and bike set-up, we will have a lazy afternoon rolling the jetlag out of our legs, covering around 50 ks in the surrounding rolling hills. Others may choose to laze under an olive tree by the pool, or explore the grounds of the Villa.

For non-riders there will be a short historic tour of the city of Pistoia.
We will dine in-house tonight, el fresco if the weather permits. Much of the produce for dinner will have been grown in the onsite biodynamic garden of this historic residence.

SATURDAY, September 21

We shall relax over breakfast, no rush today before we saddle up to ride the TT course, dropping past Lucca for lunch in a restaurant, or even making a picnic atop the earthern wall of town. Maybe we'll even manage a visit to Mario Cipollini's coffee shop (not that he works there).

Non rider option is a historic tour of Lucca, with an English speaking guide.

The 2013 World Road Cycling Championships in Florence officially opens today, in Lucca, with a ceremony at 4pm.

cronosquadre donne, Pistoia-Firenze Mandela Forum, km 36,1 = Womens TTT
cronosquadre uomini, Montecatini-Firenze, km 49,6 = Mens TTT

The start of the womens TTT is in our town, so we shall combine seeing some of the ladies teams on the start ramp, with a 100km loop in the region, possibly via Montecatini, where later in the day, the men hit the start ramp.

The non-riders will be up early for a day trip to the Cinque Terre. Here they will commence an 'easy' walk from 'Monterosso al Mare' to Vernazza, stopping for a seaside lunch. Post lunch they'll return via a scenic train trip, where the Topbike van will take them back to Pistoia.
We shall regroup for dinner in-house.

cronometro donne élite, Firenze Cascine-Firenze, km 23,1  = womens elite ITT

We will not chase the event today, but take the opportunity to have a day riding in the Tuscan hills, following a loop of approx 120 km, undulating.

The non-riders will do a day trip to San Gimignano and Pisa.
Dinner will again be in-house.

TUESDAY, September 24

Worlds 2013 - Official program:
crono donne juniores, Firenze Cascine-Firenze, km 13,6 = junior womens ITT
crono under 23, Pistoia-Firenze, km 36,1 = Under 23 mens ITT

WEDNESDAY, September 25

Worlds 2013 - Official program:
crono professionisti, Montecatini Terme-Firenze, km 49,6 = senior mens ITT

Jamie Drew spent his professional years training of the rolling hills in this region and knows all the best small roads and training loops. Today he will guide you for another 100ker, and find the best viewing position on the Mens ITT course.

The non-riders will do a day visit to Montepulciano, Pienza and Montalcino.  Enjoying (at least) one glass of wine inside the fortress walls of Montalcino, one of the most beautiful areas in all of Tuscany. Montepulciano and Montalcino are renowned for their red wines and Pienza is also famous for its cheese.
Tonight is our last in-house dinner, as for the next four nights we shall dine at different restaurants in the centre of Florence.

THURSDAY, September 26

Today there is a break in the official program, this is timed perfectly as the Topbike crew move to their new accommodation in central Florence.  The non-riders will transit via the Topbike air-conditioned bus. In the afternoon they may wish to tick off one of the Florence 'must sees'  ('Florence Optional add on 1' * for non riders only).

Florence - 2013 World Road Cycling Championships

The riders will use today to ride the 'lead in' section of the senior men's worlds course, from Lucca to Florence.  The Topbike Bus will take the riders to Lucca to alight, before following them into Florence. This will be a big day's riding, best save some energy for an evening Italian Passagiata around the Duomo, which is right outside our centrally located Palazzo.
Distance: the men's course is about 260km, however this includes 10 laps in Florence, the 'lead in' should be an achievable 100k or so. Dinner will be short stroll from the hotel.

FRIDAY September 27

Worlds 2013 - Official program:
linea uomini juniores, Montecatini Terme-Firenze, km 130 = junior mens road race
linea donne élite, Montecatini Terme-Firenze, km 130  = womens elite road race

The non-riders will use the morning to wander around Florence, while the cyclists will saddle up and do the same, albeit a little faster.
Of course there is the possibility of forgoing all cycling, and taking up another Florence tourist attraction ('Florence Optional add on 2')*.
The city will be abuzz, as both the junior men and the senior women's races finish in the centre of Florence.
We will dine again centrally in Florence.

SATURDAY September 28

Worlds 2013 - Official program:
linea donne juniores, Firenze Cascine-Firenze, km 78' = Junior womens road race
linea under 23, Montecatini Terme-Firenze, km 178' = junior mens road race

The non-riders will be up early to visit the famous markets of Florence, again close to our hotel.
The riders today will take on a longer loop (perhaps up to 130kms) which will traverse the infamous Florentine bianca strada or 'white roads' of the 'L'eroica' http://www.eroica-ciclismo.it/italiano/home.asp.
Some of you may recall Cadel's excellent day in the mud, traversing these roads to win a stage in the 2010 Giro d'Italia.
Dinner will be in another Florentine restaurant. Bistecca Fiorentina anyone?

SUNDAY September 29

Worlds 2013 - Official program:
linea professionisti, Lucca-Firenze, km 267' = Men's road race

We will guarantee the legs will be sore today after a big 10 days. The morning ride will take in around 60ks. Plenty of time to get back and take up a position on the Fiesole hill, where the riders will pass 10 times. Expect the group to become progressively smaller as in (more or less) the gospel of Topbike Client Jeff Sells ' If he can stay at the front until the end, then he will be the winner'
Even the non-riders will enjoy bike racing atmosphere today.
