NEWS: MARCH 2006 - Commonwealth Games Update
Emma Colson wears the green and gold.
Emma Colson will be riding for Australia at the Commonwealth Games in Melbourne 23rd March 2006 in Mountain Bike Cross Country.
Emma had a smooth year in 2005, winning the national title in March and then competing overseas. Things started to go wrong one week prior to world championships when she was hit by a motor bike resulting in a ruptured ACL.
“Following the knee surgery getting back into training was mentally and physically a hard slog. The first national round for the year was crucial to compete in for points for the selection races but I really didn’t feel confident on the knee to race. I guess I have now learnt a whole new depth to being an athlete, coping with enforced variations in training and just looking after yourself enough to sneak into the results when it really matters.”
“Most people do things the other way around (move from being athletes to becoming staff). I worked with the Australian Womens Road Cycling team from 1997 – 2000. Being selected as physio at the Olympics was very special but nothing like the feeling of gaining selection as an athlete for Commonwealth Games.”

AUSSIE MTB CHAMPION POSITIVE ABOUT RECOVERY
Emma Colson (Topbike-Giant) had an arthroscope on her knee last Wednesday and is feeling confident about her recovery.
Colson had a head-on with a motor bike the week prior to World Championships this year. An arthroscope with Melbourne orthopaedic surgeon Rob Howells last Wednesday revealed a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament and small tears in the lateral meniscus and lateral capsule. The debris blocking the joint was removed with the surgical procedure.
Colson (a qualified physio) elected not to reconstruct the cruciate at this stage, knowing that the rehabilitation period from such a procedure would certainly rule her out of the two Commonwealth Games selection races (December in Lysterfield at the venue and January MTB Nationals at Mt Beauty).
One week following the scope Colson had this to say:
“Whilst walking is still difficult I managed an hour on the ergo this morning and hope to be back out on the road and MTB soon. I am confident that I have enough time to come up for the selection races, the longer break has probably done me good. If anything I am now more motivated than ever. The knee should be able to cope with riding without a cruciate ligament. Fortunately neither Lysterfield nor Mt Beauty are courses I would expect to have to “dab” in – especially in summer. “
